Census of Prairie Provinces, 1926 : population and agriculture, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta : CS98-1926-PDF

"The census of the Prairie Provinces, taken as of June 1st, 1926 was the eleventh for Manitoba since it was created out of a portion of the territory acquired from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1870, and the fifth for the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta since they acquired provincial status by the "Saskatchewan and Alberta Acts" of 1905. The 1926 Census of the Prairie Provinces was taken under the authority of the Statistics Act 1918, which was a consolidation of all previous statistical legislation. The Act provides that 'a census of population and agriculture of the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta shall be taken by the Bureau, under the direction of the Minister, on a date in the month of June in the year one thousand nine hundred and twenty-six to be fixed by the Governor in Council and every tenth year thereafter.' The primary purpose of a quinquennial census, of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, is to fix a basis for readjustment of the annual per capita allowance payable by the Dominion Government to these provinces ... The statistics of the 1926 Census of the Prairie Provinces were first published in three separate reports as the compilations covering population and agriculture were completed, one each for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. ... In the present instance these reports are brought together under one cover with a general introduction in which the more important phases of population and agricultural statistics are summarized for the three provinces as a whole."--Introd., p. vii-viii.
