Census of Newfoundland and Labrador, 1901 .: CS98-1901Nfld/1903E-PDF

Return of the Census of Newfoundland and Labrador for 1901. The work has been divided into two volumes, one dealing with the population—their sex, denomination, ages and professions; and the other with the property and productions of the Colony. "Taking the figures as shown by the census sheets of 1901, the population stands thus:—Newfoundland- 217,037 ; Labrador - 3,947; Total 220,984 ... From the records of vital statistics, commenced in 1891, it is found that from the period, 1st August, 1891, to 30th September, 1901, there were 66,954 births and 35,505 deaths in the Colony, The excess of 31,449 would be the natural growth of the population, which, by these figures, should now total 233,489, being an increase of 15.5 per cent, for the ten years. But the population numbers only 220,984, and as the immigration is practically nil, the shortage of 12,505 must be put down as the number who have emigrated during the past ten years"--Letter of transmittal, p. vi-vii, signed R. Bond, Colonial Secretary, 25th April, 1903.
