520 |a"Removal of several metres thickness of stratified muds is recognized from penetration echosounder data along a narrow belt, 1-8km wide along the Beaufort Sea shelf break (100-200m water depth). A corresponding zone of non-deposition (bypass) is bound by blankets of mud thickening away from the erosion/non-deposition belt. Long-term oceanographic moorings have previously demonstrated periodic currents capable of mud re-suspension near the shelf break. Seabed instrumented measurement of the current and its effects on the mud behavior are pending. Radiocarbon dating indicates the erosion began about 6000 years ago. A combination of geologic, oceanographic current data and 3-D oceanographic modelling approaches converge to indicate a strong birth/acceleration of the current at that time, presently recognized as the Beaufort Shelf-break Jet (BSJ). The study also helps constrain sediment structural disturbance rates from seabed fluid/gas seeps in the area”--Summary provided by publisher.
