520 |a"Anthropological field work among the Attawapiskat Indians living on the west coast of James Bay, Ontario, was carried out within the period from July 27, 1947 to June 6, 1948. The accompanying report presents a picture of the lifeways of these Cree speaking people. The purpose is, first, to show the extent to which the people's food habits are determined by social and environmental factors; second, to outline some of the paths which a planned development program could follow in an attempt to improve the native diet and make the Indians more self-sufficient, and, third, to present a body of information that would be useful to government officials charged with administering the Attawapiskat and other, culturally related, Indian groups. The report is also intended to supplement the findings of the medical party who examined the health of the Indians in August, 1947."--Introduction.
