Knowledge assessment (community and scientific) to inform the identification of critical habitat for Peary caribou, Rangifer tarandus pearyi, in the Canadian Arctic .: CW66-560/2017E-PDF

“This report describes work undertaken to inform the identification of critical habitat for Peary caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi) in Canada, as part of the requirement for the preparation of a federal Recovery Strategy for this species under the federal Species at Risk Act. The Recovery Strategy is being completed through a separate process by the Canadian Wildlife Service. The report presents a conceptual framework outlining the steps in the knowledge assessment process to inform the identification of critical habitat for Peary caribou based on scientific and community knowledge. It describes the necessary and available data to support implementation of the framework, and uses a variety of analytical procedures and assessment criteria to evaluate and describe population condition and habitat requirements across the current species distribution of Peary caribou in Canada. While data limitations and knowledge gaps that would enhance our understanding and address outstanding uncertainties are discussed, the report concludes that the available body of knowledge is sufficient from a science perspective to inform the identification of critical habitat for Peary caribou. Methodologies to update this assessment with new information are presented, as part of an adaptive management cycle to support the recovery of this species"--Preface, p. i.
