Hampel.“In Part I of this report, the importance of the reactivity of carbons to such metallurgical processes as the blast furnace and the SL/RN Direct Reduction Process is examined and the chemistry of the Boudouard Reaction is discussed. In Part II, three test methods for measuring the reactivity of cokes to carbon dioxide are compared, a loss-in-weight method, a gas-analysis method with constant CO2 flow rate, and a gas-analysis method with a variable CO2 flow rate but constant amount of conversion of CO2 to CO. Test results from the three methods on a series of eight cokes made from 2 North American coking coals showed that any of the three methods would give acceptable relative reactivity values.
