"Phosphorus and nitrogen are essential plant nutrients. When phosphorus or nitrogen levels in a river are too high or too low, however, these nutrients can have harmful effects on the food web. They are an important measure of the health of the river and its surrounding watersheds. This indicator provides the status of phosphorus and nitrogen levels along the St. Lawrence River"--p. 5.
