5203 |a"Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, a severe systemic, potentially life-threatening disease with many possible manifestations in humans. This pathogen expresses a large number of virulence factors, with many found on islands of pathogenesis. Significant efforts have been invested into vaccine development; however none have offered complete protection. A unique and conserved protein of B. pseudomallei and B. mallei has been identified as the exoprotein of a two-partner secretion pathway. This exoprotein, when expressed in a recombinant form effected the formation of actin tails in macrophage cell culture, suggesting a role in intracellular spread and a possible role in virulence. A truncated recombinant form of this protein conferred protection against B. pseudomallei and B. mallei challenge in mice when used as a vaccine candidate"--Abstract, page i.
