Environment Canada’s Lake of the Woods Science Initiative 2008 to 2011 – summary . : En164-49/1-2014E-PDF

"The Lake of the Woods is a large, transboundary water body located at the junction of the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba, and the U.S. state of Minnesota. Local and national concerns with noxious and potentially toxic cyanobacteria (aka bluegreen algae) blooms and declining water quality in Lake of the Woods (LOW) prompted the formation of Environment Canada’s Lake of the Woods Science Initiative in 2008 as part of a larger program to assess and remediate deteriorating water quality in Lake Winnipeg. This report summarizes the results of three years of Environment Canada’s science and monitoring efforts in the LOW watershed. Our goals have been to address key knowledge gaps and increase our understanding about nutrient transport and cycling in LOW, and their role in the development of the blooms and the integrity of the lake. Some of the key results of this and other initiatives are presented here in this report. The report also identifies further data gaps and makes recommendations towards future work on the lake"--p.
