Temporal trends in condition, gonado somatic index and maturity stages of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) from northern Placentia Bay (Subdivision 3Ps), Newfoundland, during 1998 / by A.D. Bolon and D.C.... : Fs70-1/1999-45E-PDF

Reports of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in spawning condition in Placetia Bay, Newfoundland, are not new. However, most of this data is not based on seasonal sampling, consequently, the duration and timeing of spawning can not be determined from such data. In the Newfoundland region, cod maturities are based on visual examinations of the gonads. As the cod are batch spawners, their accurate classification into maturity categories is visually difficult and could be improved by the use of histological analysis on gonads. The first objective of this study is to determine whether the classification of fish in spawning stage could be improved through hitological procedure. The second objective is to describe the seasonal trends in maturity, condition, and gonado-somatic index of cod sampled in northern Placentia Bay during 1998.
