Spawning stock characteristics and cod recruitment success in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence / D.P. Swain and G.A. Chouinard. : Fs70-1/2000-148E-PDF

Recruitment rate (defined here as R, the abundance of 3 year old cod, divided by S, the biomass of the spawning stock that produced them) has varied widely for cod in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. In particular, the rate of recruitment was remarkably high from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s. Variation in the recruitment rate R/S, may reflect variation in early survival of cod, or variation in the quantity or quality of eggs produced by a unit of spawning stock biomass. This paper tests two predictions related to effects of spawner characteristics on recruitment rate. First, a positive correlation between recruitment rate and measures of the age of spawners (i.e., mean age, proportion of older fish, age diversity) is predicted. The second prediction is of a positive correlation between recruitment rate and measures of the mean size and condition of spawners.
