The National Air Quality Health Index Program (AQHI) is a program component of the Clean Air Agenda’s Adaptation Theme. The AQHI is jointly managed by Health Canada and Environment Canada and was developed in order to have a nationally consistent approach to forecasting and communicating air quality information based on local conditions. It has been designed to replace the existing Air Quality Index (AQI). While the original AQI provided a mechanism to communicate poor air conditions to Canadians, there was concern that the design did not reflect advances to monitor and forecast air pollution and the current state of understanding of the air pollution health effects. The AQHI is based on measuring air pollutants known to harm human health: nitrogen dioxide, Particulate Matter (2.5μm) and Ground-level Ozone. The scientific foundation for the new AQHI is based on epidemiological research undertaken by Health Canada that estimates the short-term relative risks posed by a combination of common air pollutants that are known to harm human health. ...
