Guidelines for Canadian drinking water quality : guideline technical document - benzo[a]pyrene / prepared by the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water of the Federal-Provincial-Territorial... : H144-35/2016E-PDF

"Levels of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in Canadian drinking water are generally very low. There are no industrial or commercial uses for BaP in Canada, but BaP is commonly found in the environment as a product of the incomplete combustion of organic matter. Natural sources of BaP emissions (e.g., forest fires, volcanic activity) have been documented, but human-made sources, such as combustion of fossil fuels, residential wood burning, creosote-treated wood and coke oven emissions, are the major sources of BaP emissions in the environment. Although BaP can be found in both surface water and groundwater, its presence in drinking water is primarily due to its leaching from the linings of water storage tanks and distribution lines. This guideline technical document reviews and assesses all identified health risks associated with BaP in drinking water. It incorporates new studies and approaches and takes into consideration the availability of appropriate analytical methods and treatment technologies. Based on this review, the guideline for BaP in drinking water is a maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) of 0.000 04 mg/L (0.04 μg/L)"--Executive summary, p. 1.
