"At its first major meeting, held in Moscow in May 1964, the International Upper Mantle Committee (IUMC) decided to convene special symposia on three of the main programs sponsored by the Committee. The invitation of the Canadian Upper Mantle Committee to hold these symposia in Ottawa prior to the IUMC business meeting in September 1965, was accepted. The Geological Survey of Canada has published the proceedings of the symposia on Drilling for Scientific Purposesl and The World Rift System. The present volume contains the papers from the remaining symposium"--Intro., p. 1.
