"Japan has long been famous for its utilization of seaweeds. Japan's exploitation of seaweeds has reached a degree of development undreamed of in the Western world. not only are both native and imported seaweeds exploited effectively but cultivation of several important species has been carried on successfully for several hundred years. It was in order to learn at first hand some of the work of the Japanese phycologists, and particularly to observe something of the seaweed cultivation that the writer made a trip to Japan on behalf of the Department of Fisheries of Canada in October 1966"--p. 2.
