“Prior to August 1969, a medical threat to the mother's life was the only ground for a woman to obtain legal abortion in Canada. The Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1969 (Bill C-150) to amend the then existing abortion law was given Royal Assent and its provisions went into effect on August 26, that year. The amended law allows a therapeutic (legal) abortion to be performed if, in the opinion of a therapeutic abortion committee (a committee attached to a hospital and comprising of no fewer than three doctors) the continuation of the pregnancy would endanger or would be likely to endanger the mother's life or health. This document, through a series of more than thirty charts and graphs, provides an historical perspective to those therapeutic abortions conducted under the amended criminal code between the years of 1970 and 1982. It should be noted that the statistics portray only those legal abortions carried out in Canadian hospitals under the provisions of the Criminal Law Amendment Act"--p. [5].
