Tracking physical & biological change in the central basin : can physicists close the door / by L. Royer, F. Chiocchio, F.M. Boyce. : En13-5/86-27E-PDF
"This paper dicusses one of the goals of the 1979/80 Lake Erie experiments, that of studying vertical fluxes of heat, momentum, dissolved and suspended materials in an open lake setting while accounting for the changes produced by horizontal transport processes. In order to minimize the effects of transport processes, the mid-basin experiment was located in a zone that is considered to be relatively homogeneous; horizontal gradients of temperature, dissolved oxygen, etc. are small. Time series measurements of physical and chemical parameters made at three-hourly intervals from an anchored week-long ship during several experiments showed small but significant changes over time intervals of less than a day. These changes appear to be due to the advection of parcels of water of slightly differing qualities"--Exec. summary,
