This project is a field trial involving the reception of television signals at 12 GHz from the 20 watt rf channels of the ANIK-B using low cost TV receive-only earth terminals with antenna diameters of 1.2 and 1.8m. The PDPP has been in operation since late September 1979 with approximately 80 receive-only terminals located in the two geographically distinct regions of northwestern Ontario and British Columbia, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The objectives of the project are to demonstrate, evaluate and gain field experience with direct-to-home and small community satellite broadcasting, to provide a testing ground and small initial market for terminals, to contribute to policy development and plans for future operational use of broadcasting satellites and to provide information to the various interested agencies. This report describes the pilot project, documents the technical results obtained, summarizes the reaction of the participants, including members of the general public, and draws conclusions regarding the implementation of future direct broadcasting satellite systems"--Abstract, page 1.Issued also in print format.Artificial satellites in telecommunicationCanada.Direct broadcast satellite televisionCanada. Communications Research Centre (Canada), issuing body.CRC report ;no. 1349.(CaOODSP)9.882492PDF2.81 MBhttps://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2021/isde-ised/co24/Co24-3-7-1349-1981-eng.pdf02335cam 2200397zi 45009.895005CaOODSP20221107173913m o d f cr bn|||||||||210104e198202 oncab obt f000 0 eng dCaOODSPengrdaCaOODSPn-cn---Co24-3/7-1353-1982E-PDFWhitteker, J. During and after the transition, the sun's reflections from the satellite were detected and monitored at the experimental test site (ETS) for the Ground Based Electro Optical Deep Space Surveillance System (GEODSS) in New Mexico. In this report, the satellite's attitude dynamics are deduced by correlating the GEODSS ETS observations with dynamics analysis and simulation. The transition to spin took about 15 days. Thereafter, the rate of spin decayed to zero in about 70 days due to solar pressure. The GEODSS ETS observations also provide data on the relative misalignment and bending of the two solar sails of the satellite"--Abstract, page 1.Issued also in print format.Hermes (Communications satellite)Artificial satellitesAttitude control systems.Artificial satellitesStability.Hermes (Satellite de télécommunications)Satellites artificielsSystèmes de commande d'orientation.Satellites artificielsStabilité.Communications Research Centre (Canada), issuing body.CRC report ;no. 1354.(CaOODSP)9.882492PDF1.48 MBhttps://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2021/isde-ised/co24/Co24-3-7-1354-1982-eng.pdf02516cam 2200385zi 45009.895007CaOODSP20221107173913m o d f cr bn|||||||||210104e198204 onca obt f000 0 eng dCaOODSPengrdaCaOODSPCo24-3/7-1356-1982E-PDFRook, B. The underlying principles are the same as the original CHA algorithm, namely; (a) modelling the behavior of tracking radars in the low-angle region; (b) comparing results of the model with measured data in a correlation process, and (c) selecting the true track from the family of tracks provided by the correlator. The improvements to be discussed are concerned mainly with increasing the efficiency and robustness of the algorithm. The most significant is the procedure for effecting item (c). In addition, a description is given of the software implementation of the algorithm together with the sampled-aperture radar facility used to record data for testing the algorithm. It does not go into great technical detail, but attempts to highlight the important issues and to indicate how they are related. These issues are: 1) the choice of coordinate system in which to make target measurements, to initiate or associate tracks, and to update and display these tracks; 2) the choice of filter for prediction and smoothing of track data; 3) the techniques to be employed for conflict resolution, when ambiguities arise in the association of new target observations with existing tracks; 4) the use of manoeuvre-detection procedures, when the target-in-track deviates from its modelled mode of behavior; and 5) the process of initiating a new track automatically, by combining past measurements to form a likely trajectory of a target of interest. Direct and cross-polarized signal levels were measured for six months in mid-1979, and significant attenuation and depolarization were observed during periods of rainfall as well as at certain times when the atmosphere was clear. The probabilities of occurrence of attenuation and depolarization, and the relations between them, comprise a major part of the report. Statistics of the durations and of the rates-of-change of attenuation are also presented. There is also a discussion of the relation of depolarization during rainfall to the canting angles of raindrops, and a procedure is developed by which the statistics of the canting angles are obtained. Throughout the report, reference is made to relevant CCIR documents to test the appropriateness to Canadian conditions of presently recommended predictions of various propagation phenomena. Finally, the magnitudes of attenuation during rainfall and attenuation in clear air, and of depolarization in both circumstances, are compared and assessed for their effects on microwave communication system design"--Abstract, page 1.Issued also in print format.Radio wave propagationNational Capital Region (Ont. and Québec)MicrowavesAttenuationNational Capital Region (Ont. and Québec)Ondes radioélectriquesPropagationCapitale nationale, Région de la (Ont. et Québec)Micro-ondesAffaiblissementCapitale nationale, Région de la (Ont. et Québec)Communications Research Centre (Canada), issuing body.CRC report ;no. 1358.(CaOODSP)9.882492PDF1.29 MBhttps://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2021/isde-ised/co24/Co24-3-7-1358-1982-eng.pdf02496cam 2200433zi 45009.895021CaOODSP20221107173916m o d f cr bn|||||||||210105e198209 onca obt f000 0 eng dCaOODSPengrdaCaOODSPCo24-3/7-1359-1982E-PDFVigneron, F. The techniques involve partitioning the full aperture data, in either the time or the frequency domain. Each partition or sub-aperture is then processed independently by the application of a conventional matched filter, or the equivalent. The low resolution images formed by this process are then coherently recombined to form a full resolution image. Such a processing scheme has the advantage of high computational efficiency and provides the capability for the compensation of low frequency spurious motions, even when the SAR is operating in a highly squinted, high resolution imaging situation. A detailed description of two coherent sub-aperture techniques namely, the multi-look matched filtering approach and the step transform, are presented. From the studies, it is shown that the detection performance of an SBR system can be greatly improved with the application of the latter form of weighting. For the comparative studies, two antenna systems with the same physical dimensions were used, (1) a Taylor-weighted circular aperture for transmitting and receiving, and (2) a uniformly-illuminated circular aperture for transmitting, and the same aperture but with Taylor weighting applied for receiving. The interference caused by the clutter background is progressively higher for ice covered ground but smaller for a snow-covered terrain and the smallest for an ocean background. An understanding of the detailed sea-clutter behaviour is important in devising signal processing algorithms aimed at optimizing radar detection performance under sea-clutter environments. A sea-clutter measurement experiment was conducted in July 1982 at North Truro (near Cape Cod), Massachusetts. The radar equipment employed was a multi-frequency, mobile coherent radar operated by Lincoln Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Sea-clutter data were collected at X, S, L, UHF and VHF bands. Because of interferences in the UHF and VHF bands, only X-, S- and L-band data are analyzed. Analyses have been carried out examining the sea-clutter coefficient as a function of frequency, polarization and waveform resolution. However, this class of antennas has not been used in radar systems because of its moderate power handling capability and a lack of satisfactory design procedures for low-sidelobe applications. Recently, there has been interest in employing the Sandwich Wire Antenna in surveillance radar systems on small naval vessels. Design studies for sandwich wire antennas have been undertaken through industrial contracts. Being a travelling wave antenna, it produces a main beam with a frequency dependent squint. There is concern that this squint may have adverse effect on the signal processing system designed for radar systems employing conventional antennas. In this report, a feasibility study is carried out to evaluate the effects of the frequency squint on existing radar signal processing performance. In particular, expressions are developed and presented describing aperture signals for a conventional (SAMPAR) configuration which uses coherent local oscillators. The radar signals are shown to contain an interference term in which is contained all of the information used during Correlation Height Analysis (CHA) processing. A continuous wave (CW) experiment designed to evaluate the CHA algorithm is described. This system employs a beacon source and self-cohering receivers. It is shown that the same interference term is also contained in the self-cohered received signal. Some pre-processing of the interference term is required prior to CHA processing to optimize the results. A discussion is given of the implementation of Doppler processing for various target velocities. Finally a discussion is given of signal-to-noise ratios for typical target geometries and sea-state conditions, in which forward-scatter clutter, back-scatter clutter and system noise are taken into account"--Abstract, page 1.Issued also in print format.Coherent radar.Tracking radar.Signal processingDigital techniques.Radar cohérent.Radar de poursuite.Traitement du signalTechniques numériques.Communications Research Centre (Canada), issuing body.CRC report ;no. 1412.(CaOODSP)9.882492PDF4.21 MBhttps://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2021/isde-ised/co24/Co24-3-7-1412-1987-eng.pdf02255cam 2200409zi 45009.895073CaOODSP20221107173926m o d f cr bn|||||||||210106e198511 onca obt f000 0 eng dCaOODSPengrdaCaOODSPCo24-3/7-1397-1985E-PDFBird, John Sterling, author.Low Doppler target detection in ground clutter / by John S. The techniques to set up the equations for the weight vector are developed with a K-element array. They are then applied to adaptive sidelobe cancellation and the simultaneous nulling of the monopulse sum and difference beam patterns. The new weight vector calculation method has many desirable properties. It is easy to impose mainbeam constraints on the weight vector. Like the sample matrix inversion (SMI) method, it has rapid convergence characteristics. As well, the equations can be implemented in special-purpose hardware devices such as systolic arrays designed to increase throughput rates in solving linear equations. The purpose of the meeting was to assess the recovery potential of the Great Lakes-Upper St. Lawrence populations (Designatable Unit [DU] 3) of River Darter (Percina shumardi), to provide advice that may be used for the listing decision, development of a recovery strategy and action plan, and to support decision making with regards to the issuance of permits and agreements. Participants included DFO Science, Species and Risk, Policy, and Fisheries Protection programs, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (OMNRF), and regional Conservation Authorities. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) designated River Darter in DU 3 as Endangered in 2016. This species has a very restricted distribution, occurs at few locations, and is exposed to a number of threats including shoreline hardening, exotic species, dredging, and nutrients and effluents from urban waste, spills, and agriculture"--Summary, page iv.River darterConservationOntarioCongresses.Wildlife recoveryOntarioCongresses.Conference papers and proceedingslcgftAndrews, David.Canada. Canada. The Northern Market Basket Measure (MBM-N) is an adaptation of the MBM that reflects life and conditions in two of the territories – Yukon and Northwest Territories. As with the MBM, the MBM-N is comprised of five major components: food, clothing, transportation, shelter and other necessities. The MBM-N is intended to capture the spirit of the existing MBM (i.e., represent a modest, basic standard of living) while accounting for adjustments to the contents of the MBM to reflect life in the North. This discussion paper describes a proposed methodology for the five components found in the MBM-N, as well as its disposable income. This discussion paper also provides an opportunity for feedback and comments on the proposed methodology of the MBM-N"--Page 3.Cost and standard of livingNorthwest TerritoriesStatistical methods.Cost and standard of livingYukonStatistical methods.PovertyNorthwest TerritoriesStatistical methods.PovertyYukonStatistical methods.Disposable incomeNorthwest TerritoriesStatistical methods.Disposable incomeYukonStatistical methods.Statistics Canada, issuing body. Proposals for a Northern Market Basket Measure and its disposable income / (CaOODSP)9.894687Série de documents de recherche - revenu.(CaOODSP)9.501116PDF589 Kohttps://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2021/statcan/75f0002m/75f0002m2021001-fra.pdfHTMLS.O.https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/75f0002m/75f0002m2021001-fra.htm03136cam 2200409zi 45009.892737CaOODSP20221107173244m o d f cr cn|||||||||201022e20210107onca ob f000 0 eng d9780660363608CaOODSPengrdaCaOODSPn-cn---y0y1CS62-0026/2020-1E-PDFSurvey of Household Spending modelled annual statistics, 2010 to 2017.[Ottawa] : Statistics Canada = Statistique Canada, January 7, 2021.©20211 online resource (26 pages) : colour illustrations.texttxtrdacontentcomputercrdamediaonline resourcecrrdacarrierHousehold expenditures research paper series, 1708‑8879Issued also in French under title: Statistiques annuelles modélisées de l'Enquête sur les dépenses des ménages, 2010 à 2017.Issued also in HTML format.Includes bibliographical references."Since 1997, the Survey of Household Spending (SHS) has collected detailed spending information and selected information on dwelling characteristics and household equipment. In 2010, the SHS underwent a major redesign. Due to the new survey design, certain statistics which were made available to users for reference years prior to 2010 are no longer published for years 2010 onward. These statistics include the annual average expenditure per reporting household and the annual proportion (or percentage) of households reporting. The number of households who incurred spending in the reference year (the number of households reporting) is not available for many categories as a result of the new survey design, which precludes the calculation of these two statistics. To help fill this data gap for users, a statistical model was developed in order to produce approximations of these statistics. The SHS modelled annual statistics are now available in tables A, B, and C in the appendix of this document as well as in Microsoft Excel format. This document provides information for users of the SHS 2010‑2017 modelled annual statistics. It explains the context for the modelled annual statistics, describes the tables containing these statistics, and details the methodology behind the statistical model"--Introduction, page 3.Cost and standard of livingCanadaStatistical methods.Consumption (Economics)CanadaStatistical methods.Household surveysCanadaStatistical methods.Statistics Canada, issuing body. Experimental estimates of family weekly income for January to September 2020 / by Kimberley Beck, Cilanne Boulet, Nell Hamalainen, Andrew Heisz, Eric Olson and Tahsin Mehdi.[Ottawa] : Statistics Canada = Statistique Canada, 2020.©20201 online resource (10 pages) : colour graphs.texttxtrdacontentcomputercrdamediaonline resourcecrrdacarrierIncome research paper series, Cover title."Release date: December 18, 2020."Issued also in HTML format.Issued also in French under title: Estimations expérimentales du revenu familial hebdomadaire, janvier à septembre 2020.Includes bibliographical references (page 10)."Statistics Canada has undertaken a broad range of initiatives designed to understand the impacts of COVID-19 on Canadians. This research paper highlights experimental methods designed to measure the impact of the pandemic on month-by-month family income trends of Canadians long before detailed annual statistics become available. The approach integrates weekly earnings available from the Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS) together with information specific to government transfers including special COVID-19 benefits collected through administrative data sources and imputation. The objective is to shed light on the impact of labour market disruptions on Canadians and their families and the extent to which emergency benefits introduced by the government offset these disruptions.
