Seasonal surface displacement derived from InSAR, Iqaluit, Nunavut / [by] N. Short ... [et al.]. : M183-1/66-2011E-PDF

"This map shows the spatial distribution of the relative ground surface displacement between the major terrain units during one summer in the area of Iqaluit. The ground displacement was derived using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data for the summer of 2011. Stable ground represents locations where either no vertical change was calculated or where displacement was within the expected range of error (± 0.5 cm). Very low, low, and moderate downward displacement represents surface lowering on the order of 0.5 to 2, 2 to 4.5, and 4.5 to 8.5 cm, respectively. Upward displacement represents a surface rise of 0.5 to 1.5 cm. Areas of no data result from a loss of interferometric coherence. These are typically water and other relatively smooth surfaces from which there is no radar return, or where there has been significant ground surface disturbance and the radar returns cannot be correlated. The InSAR results correspond well with the expected displacement associated with the characteristics of the major terrain units. The displacement reflects seasonal settlement caused by thawing of ice in the active layer or in the near-surface permafrost"--Abstract.
