Federal support for low income individuals and families / [written by Alex Smith, Nasreddine Ammar].: YN5-143/2017E-PDF
"Approximately 3.2 million to 5.0 million Canadians have low income. To help mitigate the effects of low income and to address the causes of economic disadvantage, the Government of Canada provides a range of tax credits, services and payments to individuals and families. In 2016, the Government committed to developing a poverty reduction strategy. To support parliamentarians in their deliberations regarding this strategy, the Parliamentary Budget Officer initiated a census of all existing federal support and services to low income Canadians and vulnerable groups. This baseline provides an important starting point regarding the amount of money currently being spent, as well as its efficacy. It sets the context for the PBO’s forthcoming report on the cost of establishing a federal guaranteed minimum income program"--Exec. summary, p. 4.
