"This report reviews of the characteristics of Indigenous small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in international trade, and identifies opportunities for enhanced federal policy and program design to support Indigenous business performance in international markets. Exporting is one of the main characteristics used to evaluate performance since businesses are confronted with numerous challenges when attempting to enter foreign markets. For Indigenous firms operating in a small open economy like Canada, internationalization can be an important strategy for business growth and success. This report is motivated by this growth strategy, to which many government departments contribute, as well as the participation and inclusion in international trade of all Canadian businesses for sustainable growth. The Office of the Chief Economist of Global Affairs Canada (OCE-GAC) partnered with the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) and used the unique data they collected, i.e. the survey results of on-reserve and off-reserve Indigenous entrepreneurs, for analysis"--Executive summary, page 3.
