"Canada has been experiencing a decline in fertility since 2009 which has accelerated since 2017. Over the same period, Canada has experienced unprecedented population growth due to strong international migration (Statistics Canada, data visualization 71-607-X2019036). To better understand these demographic events, this study measures the contribution of foreign-born women to births in Canada by analyzing vital statistics birth data from 1997 to 2024. First, an analysis of the evolution of the number of births to foreign-born mothers from 1997 to 2024 is compared with births to Canadian-born mothers over the same period, followed by a look at the specific monthly fluctuations that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Next, the distribution of births in Canada by the mother’s place of birth is examined for the same period, followed by a simulation of the estimated level of natural increase by mitigating the contribution of foreign-born individuals. This is followed by a comparison of the proportion of births to foreign-born mothers in Canada with those recorded in other countries. The variation and proportion of births according to the mother’s place of birth are then discussed. The study then looks at the main countries of birth of foreign-born mothers over the last quarter of a century, followed by a description of national differences in the prevalence of foreign-born mothers by their age at the time of their child’s birth, as well as changes in their average age of childbearing.
