Following the unexpected shutdown of the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s (AECL) Chalk River laboratories in Eastern Ontario on May 14, 2009, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources (hereafter the Committee) held several meetings with the purpose of examining the consequences of the shutdown in Canada and abroad. After approximately 15 months of repair activities, the reactor was restarted on August 17, 2010. This report summarizes the Committee’s study and presents recommendations to the Government of Canada regarding medical isotope production, supply and research in Canada, including alternatives to medical isotopes.
