Geology, Touak Fiord, Nunavut / [by] M. Sanborn-Barrie ... [et al.].: M183-1/3-2011E-PDF

"Cumberland Peninsula, eastern Baffin Island, is an underexplored, frontier region with significant diamond and base- and precious-metal potential. Plutonic rocks of tonalitic to quartz dioritic composition across southern Cumberland Peninsula form the structural basement to supracrustal rocks that dominate its northern part. Tonalitic rocks are variably foliated to gneissic with preliminary Archean ages of ca. 2.77 Ga. Supracrustal rocks occurring as isolated strands in the south are inferred to be Archean. Extensive metasedimentary cover rocks of the Hoare Bay Group in the north include silicate- and oxide-facies iron-formation, chert, graphitic-pyritiferous shale, minor quartzite, and marble, with widespread psammite-semipelite turbidite. At several localities, mafic to ultramafic volcanic rocks preserve primary textures supporting both flow and pyroclastic origin. Additional mafic panels of uncertain origin are widespread. The Hoare Bay Group contains similar rock types and apparent stratigraphic associations as observed in the Paleoproterozoic Piling Group of central Baffin Island"--Abstract.
