Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) scale age determination procedures / by S.E. MacLellan and D.C. Gillespie.Fs97-6/3123E

This manual describes standard protocols used by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Sclerochronology Lab program at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, B.C. to determine the age of scales sampled from Chinook salmon (Onchorhynchus tshawytscha) captured in Canadian fisheries. Production of best quality age data is dependent on consistent and correct application of method criteria. The manual sets out procedures which have evolved and were developed to be the current operational standards for the DFO Pacific Region. A further purpose is to provide information to other agencies and individuals wishing to employ established scale ageing methods for age determination of Chinook. A series of photos depicting examples of scale growth patterns and their age are included from representative stocks in various regions of B.C.
