520 |aThe Eel River Bar First Nation (ERBFN) approached DFO Science in spring 2010 to discuss the potential impact of the proposed decommissioning of the Eel River dam. It was decided that surveys of the clam beds would be carried out before, during and after the removal of the dam. The dam was removed completely in 2011. DFO provided scientific guidance and training to the ERBFN to develop a sampling protocol and assisted in the analysis of samples and data from the surveys. Results showed that the mean densities of clams declined in 2012, followed by an even more dramatic decline in 2013, especially of legal sized (≥ 50 mm) clams.
