The Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) appears to represent an ideal species through which to monitor potential pollutants that might originate from the pulp and paper industry. The Canadian Wildlife Service, in cooperation with D.A. Westworth and Associates Ltd., evaluated the suitability of this species for such work by conducting a census and collection of young-of-the-year mergansers near three mill sites on two drainages in northern Alberta.--Introduction
