500 |a"The present register has been drawn up essentially to make available to the general public some of the information on family histories that was collected during the research stages of developing Grosse Ile and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site."--Introduction. "This register contains two lists of names of those who died and groups together emigrants, quarantine station employees, and sailors. The first list identifies mainly those who died and were buried at the Grosse Ile quarantine station during the 24-week shipping season in 1847. The second lists a number of emigrants who died on the ships, at sea and in quarantine, during the same season."--Introduction.
5203 |aFrom 1832 to 1837, Grosse Île served as a quarantine station for the Port of Québec City, where most immigrants to Canada arrived in the years before the First World War. What is now the Grosse-Île-and-the-Irish-Memorial-National-Historic-Site witnessed many historic events over the years including a terrible typhus epidemic in 1847, which coincided with the worst year of the Great Famine in Ireland. This "Register" lists the names of emigrants, employees and sailors who died and were buried on Grosse Île in 1847, as well as emigrants who died at sea during the crossing or aboard ships while in quarantine off Grosse Île. The names of 8,308 victims were gathered from various archival sources. Their descendants, along with historians and genealogists, will find here a wealth of information not previously available. A short introduction and tables provide further details on that tragic summer, and illustrations add to our understanding of the time.
