This report has four objectives: to describe current provincial and territorial investigations of and reports on maternal deaths; to review and summarize individual case-level reports of maternal deaths between 1997 and 2000; to describe the occurrence and trends of severe maternal morbidity in Canada; and to make recommendations to enhance the surveillance of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity in Canada.
