The National Pollutant Release Inventory is a legislated inventory of pollutants released into the environment. In 2002, 3191 facilities submitted 14 638 reports on 208 pollutants. More than 200 000 tonnes of these pollutants were released at the facilities’ sites, 190 000 tonnes went for “final disposal” on-site, close to 45 000 tonnes went off-site for final disposal, about 40 000 tonnes went off site for treatment, and 1 235 000 tonnes went off site for recycling and energy recovery.
