The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on November 20, 1989. Canada ratified the Convention on December 13, 1991. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict was adopted by UNGA on May 20, 2000. Canada ratified the Optional Protocol on July 7, 2000. State Parties are required to report to the United Nations on measures they have take to give effect to the Convention and the Optional Protocol.
