This booklet explains what you need to know about being detained or imprisoned in a foreign country. It describes the assistance available to the detainee/prisoner and the detainee/prisoner’s family and friends, as well as the role of the Government of Canada. It sets out what services are and are not provided by consular officials. The booklet also offers tips on hiring a foreign lawyer; visiting a Canadian in prison abroad; and applying for transfer to Canada under bilateral treaties.
