500 |a"The Canada Research Chairs Program will offer research and salary support for outstanding university researchers, beginning in the fiscal year 2000-01. It is expected that there will be 2,000 Research Chairs by 2004-05. Excellence in research is of paramount importance in the selection of chairholders. Chairs will be in priority areas identified by universities in their Strategic Research Plans, and will be filled by individuals who meet the Program's rigorous criteria of excellence.
