Economic valuation of mortality risk reduction : review and recommendations for policy and regulatory analysis / [by] Lauraine G. Chestnut, Paul De Civita.: PH4-51/2009E-PDF

A review of the available literature on the value of a statistical life (VSL). The VSL is used in economic evaluations (e.g. benefit-cost analysis) of proposed regulations and policies that affect human health to help understand the resulting benefits or damages. Existing primary studies and synthesis analyses are reviewed with a focus on recommending appropriate central, low and high values for Canadian public policy. Canadian as well as U.S. studies comprise the majority of the studies reviewed. A considerable amount of effort was placed on discussing the range of adjustments that theoretically can be made to adjust the values for age, income and cause of the premature mortality.
