520 |aWater properties and particles in Douglas Channel were characterized during four cruises (July 2013, April, July and October 2014), and with moored sensors and sediment traps (July 2013-June 2014.) An outflowing surface layer 10-30 m thick, driven by Kitimat and Kemano River discharge, overlay a mid-depth layer that exchanged with Hecate Strait. Deep-water renewal in June increased the concentration of oxygen by 1 mL/L to 3.5 mL/L. The surface layer was turbid (beam attenuation coefficient ≤6 m-1). The sinking particle flux at 50 m was 438 g m-2yr-1,and the organic carbon flux 37 gC m-2yr-1. Fluxes of particles and organic carbon peaked in late May, during the river freshet. The concentration of orga nic carbon in the sinking particles was highest in August and September (12-13%), except for a single peak in mid-November (22%).
