Biological and catch-effort information is insufficient to evaluate the status of more than a few stocks of alewives and blueback herring. This paper examines the status, from 1960 to 1997, of alewife and blueback herring stocks (hereafter termed alewives unless specifically differentiated) in Scotia-Fundy area based on fisheries landings, licenses issued, and logbook-reported catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE). Catch and CPUE trends are presumed indicative of relative abundance.
