520 | |aThis paper presents a re-evaluation of the data from the tagging and recovery programs of Pacific herring from 1936-92, presents new analyses of the tagging data, and comments on the issue and implications for 'homing' in herring. An overview of the past programs showing the places and dates of tag releases and recoveries is presented. Then, analyses are presented that examine how apparent 'homing' rates vary as a function of definition of the homing area: large areas will appear to have high homing rates, small areas have lower apparent homing rates. It is also shown that the apparent homing rate is affected by duration of the period that the tagged fish are at large and the season of tag release and recovery. |
