Development of a fishery for tanner crab (Chionoecetes tanneri) off the coast of British Columbia / G.D. Workman ... [et al.].: Fs70-1/2000-169E-PDF

This paper constitutes a progress report on the ongoing Phase 1 prerequisites for the development of a fishery for the deep water Tanner crab. Brief summaries of the methods and results of a DFO trawl survey and an Industry trap survey of Tanner crab are presented. Methods employed to estimate the abundance of Tanner crab and calculate total allowable removals (TAR) or harvest are described. The paper also identifies other sources of by-catch and mortality identified through data mining projects. The benefits and shortcomings of the current assessment methodology are discussed, as are the potential gear conflicts and habitat/ecosystem impacts of deep-water fisheries and possible management approaches to the fishery. Finally, recommendations for the future development of the fishery are presented and further research needs are identified.
