5203 |aBring Your Own Device or BYOD as it is commonly known, is a popular arrangement for many private sector organizations in Canada. With BYOD, however, there is an increased blurring of the lines between professional and personal lives, with employee concerns that their privacy is at risk, not to mention issues associated with consumers’ personal information. Organizations considering BYOD need to protect the enterprise information accessed from and residing on employees’ mobile devices. Achieving an implementation strategy that effectively protects the enterprise information and complies with customers’ and employees’ privacy rights under federal and provincial legislation is a challenging exercise that involves policy, training and technical solutions. To assist organizations, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Alberta and British Columbia Information and Privacy Commissioners have published these guidelines to address what organizations should consider when determining whether and how to implement BYOD.
