The data in this table are based on notifications of new primary sites of cancer as reported to the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System by provincial tumour registries. The reporting system has been in operation since 1969. For the first ten years (up to 1978) diagnostic detail about tumours included only information on the anatomical site or organ system (classified according to the International Classification of Diseases). Starting in 1979, most provincial cancer registries reported information on the histology (morphology) of cancers (classified according to the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-0)) in addition to information on cancer site. This allows studies of the distribution and determinants of different cancers at a much more detailed level and may provide additional insights concerning cancer-causing factors. The table shows the distribution of histological types of cancer for each cancer site, by age. A second table, which is available on request, shows the same detail about diagnosis by province of residence.
