Cruise Matthew 2001030 geophysical surveys and sediment sampling operations near two marine mine tailings disposal sites in northern Newfoundland June 27 - July 8, 2001 / D.R. Parrott, M.B. Parsons, and...: M183-2/4994E-PDF
From June 27 to July 8, 2001, the Geological Survey of Canada (Atlantic) (GSCA) investigated environmental impacts associated with historical disposal of sulfide-rich mine tailings into the ocean near two abandoned copper mines in northern Newfoundland. The main goals of these studies were: (1) to determine the volume and distribution of tailings on the seafloor; (2) to assess the potential for reworking of the tailings by oceanographic processes; and (3) to characterize the geochemical processes that control the mobility and bioavailability of potentially toxic elements (e.g. As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn) from mine tailings in the marine environment. ...
