520 | |aAn acoustical analysis of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner was performed to characterize the noise during functional scanning. This work was performed in the interest of implementing auditory stimuli in future studies, and assessing the risk to participants for overexposure to noise. The noise level during functional scanning was 113.9 dBA, with the greatest energy between 1 and 2 kHz. This frequency range should be avoided in the design of auditory cues to ensure that they are clearly audible. With proper use of hearing protection, participants can be exposed to functional scanning noise for about one hour according to the Canada Labour Code limit. These results form the basis for the design of auditory stimuli for future functional MRI (fMRI) studies, and provide guidance for the maximum length of fMRI experimental protocols. |
