520 |aThe Assessing Sonar Performance in Realistic Environments (ASPIRE) project, completed in March 2012, was a four year Applied Research Project that was intended to determine how to sample the underwater environment in an adaptive and optimal manner to enhance tactical decision making for anti-submarine warfare (ASW). The project achieved its proposed outcomes, developing and improving tools for identifying what aspects of the environment limit our ability to accurately predict sonar performance, and how to best sample the environment to minimize these limitations. The project also demonstrated our capability for using Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) techniques to optimize our predictions and sonar performance, and showed how REA-derived products and predictions can be integrated with the ASW tactical picture.
