520 |aA C-band SAR Ship Detectability Performance Tool has been extended to X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) by analyzing TerraSAR-X ocean imagery. First, a database of validated X-band SAR ship signatures was developed using coastal-received Automatic Identification System (AIS) data over the Strait of Gibraltar. The database was used to derive a semi-empirical model for the ship radar cross section (RCS) and its variability. Second, X-band SAR imagery of meteorological buoys has provided a set of X-band ocean backscatter measurements for known wind conditions. These measurements have been used to validate a model that relates X-band ocean backscatter to wind speed. The upgraded X-band SAR Ship Detectability Performance Tool can be used to predict the ship detection performance of existing and future X-band SAR missions, which could include the follow-on to the RADARSAT Constellation Mission.
