Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy I and II formative evaluation : final report.: H14-159/2007E-PDF

The formative evaluation of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) I and II Initiatives is a key evaluation for the Health Products and Food Branch (HPFB). An amount of $10.38 million over five years (from April 1, 2003 – March 31, 2008) was allocated to BSE I in order to increase the knowledge and capacity to track and trace a limited number of products that contain bovine-sourced ingredients and thus deal with potential risks to human health. An additional $12.25 million over two years (from April 1, 2004 – March 31, 2006) was allocated to BSE II to enhance the conduct of risk assessments to human health of bovine-derived products and targeted scientific research on BSE and Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) to increase scientific capacity. There is policy approval for further funding of BSE II activities of up to $21 million over three years (April 1, 2006 – March 31, 2009) for Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to continue targeted research and risk assessments to address transmission pathways associated with BSE/TSE and human health (see Appendix 1 for a breakdown of funding by directorate and PHAC). ...
