520 | |aIn 1998, the federal government established the Toxic Substances Research Initiative (TSRI) to focus research on toxic substances and their effect on the environment and human health. The Initiative funds research projects to enhance the knowledge base needed to improve policies, regulations and programs to define and reduce ecosystem and human health effects of toxic substances in Canada. TSRI has a total budget of $40 million over four years. Unless the government decides to renew it, the Initiative will sunset at the end of fiscal year 2001-2002. The Minister of Health and the Minister of Environment are jointly responsible for overseeing the implementation of the TSRI.
