520 |a"In 2006, the Deepwater Sculpin (Great Lakes-Western St. Lawrence populations) was designated a species of Special Concern in Canada by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), and was listed on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) in 2007. The COSEWIC designation was based on the species’ restricted distribution and the loss of two populations in addition to the possibility of a decline in one further population. Although the Deepwater Sculpin is also widely distributed in western Canada (Western populations), these populations were assessed as Not at Risk and, hence, are not included in this management plan. The long-term (> 20 years) goal of this management plan is to ensure the long-term persistence of Deepwater Sculpin throughout its current and historical distribution in the Great Lakes – Western St. Lawrence DU. Management should be directed towards ensuring the conservation and restoration of habitat for known populations. More quantifiable objectives relating to individual populations will be developed once the necessary sampling and analysis have been completed"--Executive summary, p. iv.
