Owing to the fact that the labour requirements for certain crops occur at different periods of the year, it is not always possible to make a direct comparison between these crops but it is possible to compare other crops which compete for labour at the same time, such as wheat, oats and barley, on the one hand, or corn, sunflowers or roots on the other. It may also be possible to calculate the maximum acreage of the various crops which could be produced. Data on cost of production, accurately kept for several years and then properly interpreted, make possible a more intelligent selection of crops and throw somelight on a better proportion of each crop to grow"--p.
