5200 |a"Some indication of the important role occupied by tuberculin in Canadian veterinary medicine may be gathered from the amount supplied veterinary inspectors employed by the Dominion Department of Agriculture for the diagnosis and control of bovine tuberculosis throughout Canada, and which, according to the figures of the Chief Pathologist, as given in the 1933 Report of the Veterinary Director General, amounted to 2,104,220 test doses for the year ending March 31, 1933. This extensive and almost ubiquitous use of tuberculin in Canada makes it imperative that a standard product of adequate potency be in the hands of veterinarians who employ it in order to obtain uniformly the best results. ... The following experimental studies made over a period of seven years (1927-1933) concern comparative potency determinations by in vivo and in vitro methods of synthetic tuberculins prepared under different conditions and treated with a variety of reagents, along with related observations and evidence to explain paradoxical results that may be encountered in utilizing the complement fixation method for indicating potency"- Introd., p. 3-4.
