520 |a"Petroleum pipelines, like highways, railways and power line corridors, are long established in Canada. They are instrumental to the quality of life and the standard of living we enjoy in Canada today. Pipelines have no equal when it comes to the safe, reliable and cost-efficient movement of petroleum over long distances. They are critically important to the creation of wealth in Canada and their use and development are in the public interest and the greater good of all Canadians. In early 2016 the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications decided to undertake a study on the development of a strategy to facilitate the transport of crude oil to eastern Canadian refineries and to ports on the east and west coasts. Since the start of our hearings in April, the committee has heard from 110 witnesses representing a wide cross section of stakeholders including industry and business leaders, First Nations, government officials, academics and environmental groups. In addition, the committee travelled to both the east and west coasts holding public hearings and undertaking fact-finding visits to refineries and ports"--Preface.
